Endoscopic Laser-Assisted Sinus Surgery

This web site will help you understand more about the specialized type of secure endoscopic sinus surgery developed and taught by Dr. Paul Toffel. This surgical procedure is called Endoscopic Laser-Assisted Sinus Surgery.

The original technique for this surgery was devceloped in Europe more than 20 years ago, although it was not introduced in this country until surgeons at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Texas and the University of Southern California popularized the technique in the mid-eighties. Dr. Toffel became a leader in the field of endoscopic sinus surgery at the University of Southern California and has published several national articles on the subject.

To perform the procedure a surgeon uses an endoscope and a laser, the same tools that revolutionized arthroscopic knee surgery. These tools minimize trauma to the tissue and yield better results than those procedures performed with traditional surgical me thods.

The endoscopic technique allows surgeons to clear the sinus passages at the narrow areas where mucous drains into the nose. These passages, called the ethmoid sinuses, are where most blockage problems occur.
